One difficult but necessary rule of housing whole male and female cats in the same household - They must be kept separate from each other. These boys are really very good at what they do and cats breed indiscriminately - their moms, their sisters, the cat who had kittens 3 weeks ago.... you just can't let nature take it's course in this regard.
Throughout this site there are photos of our babies in the kitten room, which is specially finished for ease of cleaning and safety of little ones. Our home is "child proofed" for the cats. Blind cords, electrical outlets, plants, knickknacks, everything is given consideration. Mark's office has a screen door on it to keep the critters out of the routers and modems and stuff. This area pictured below is just for the boys (and also doubles as Traci's office)
Make no mistake about it - whole male cats can be extremely difficult to maintain in a clean environment and to keep happy. Some do nothing but pace and call and spray. Those boys are called "cats we had to neuter" in our breeding program. We don't think it is fair to them to live with a constant level of stress and frustration. We are fortunate to be able to provide a large area devoted to the happiness, care and well being of our whole males. The lighting is full spectrum and there is plenty of natural sunlight as well.
The boys get plenty of companionship in their spacious living area. The cage is two joined Cage Craft (no longer in production) cages whose doors may be closed to isolate or confine as necessary. To date these doors have remained open at all times. We have a linoleum remnant inside the cage area for ease of cleaning. The white door on the right side of the photo is mounted on a slider and keeps the boys out of the rest of the house. The other cats can play with them through the door and the wire panels, but they can't get close enough to mate.
Plastic kid's yard toys make good playthings for whole male cats, they are easy to clean if the male sprays on them. Knock on wood, our males at this time are not spraying. The "back room" of the boys pen can easily be made into a separate confinement area. Currently it holds a large litter box and a scratching post.
Here are Earl and Froggie hanging out on the large coffee table style cat scratching post, watching the (dang) rabbits eat my flowers and the birds play in the plants. It's a great view of a lot of activity to keep them entertained. The last shot is taken through the sliding door and gives an idea of the depth of the room.
